Terms governing the use of the TimeProofs website, open protocol draft, and reference API: acceptable use, data handling, IP, disclaimers, liability, and dispute resolution.
1. Scope and Agreement
These Terms govern access to and use of the TimeProofs website, protocol specification, and reference API (the “Service”). By using the Service, you accept these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If you use the Service for an organization, you represent authority to bind that organization. Minimum age: 16.
2. Definitions
- Hash: irreversible SHA-256 digest of input content.
- Proof: tuple (
hash,ts,sig, optionalmeta). - Meta: optional small JSON you provide. Must not contain personal data.
3. Eligibility and Accounts
- You must have legal capacity to contract. The Service is not directed to children.
- API keys, if issued, are confidential. You are responsible for usage under your key.
- You must keep your systems secure and patched.
4. Acceptable Use
- No unlawful activity or violation of third-party rights.
- No personal data in
meta; submit hashes only. - No malware, spam, abusive scraping, or attempts to bypass rate limits.
- No reverse engineering or interference with verification endpoints.
- No prohibited jurisdictions, sanctioned persons, or export-controlled use.
5. Fair Use and Rate Limits
- Adaptive rate limits per IP/key may be enforced to protect stability.
- Excessive or abusive traffic may be throttled or blocked.
- Contact legal@timeproofs.io for higher quotas.
6. Data Handling
- We process SHA-256 hashes and small optional metadata you provide.
- Original content is not uploaded to us by design.
- Public verification reveals existence status for a submitted hash.
- Operational edge logs are minimal and short-lived for security and reliability.

7. Intellectual Property
- Marks: “TimeProofs” and “ProofSpec” are protected names and marks.
- Protocol and docs: text under Apache-2.0 or MPL-2.0; see file headers.
- Reference code: open-source under the repository license.
- Open Source: third-party OSS licenses govern their components.
- Feedback: you grant a worldwide, royalty-free license to use feedback.
8. Beta; No SLA
- The Service is pre-GA in v0.1. Features may change or be discontinued.
- No uptime SLA or support commitments are provided in v0.1.
9. Modifications; Suspension
- We may update, suspend, or discontinue parts of the Service with or without notice.
- We may suspend keys or access to protect the Service or comply with law.
10. Security and Disclosure
- Transport uses TLS. Server signatures use HMAC-SHA256 over defined fields.
- Report vulnerabilities to security@timeproofs.io or see security.txt.
- Do not publicly disclose before coordinated remediation.
11. Notices and Takedown
- For IP complaints or mistaken personal data in
meta, email legal@timeproofs.io with the hash, context, and legal basis. - Designated agent: legal@timeproofs.io.
- We may remove proofs or limit access where legally required.
12. Privacy and Compliance
- Hash-only design reduces personal data exposure. Do not send personal data in
meta. - Edge infrastructure may imply international transfers; see Privacy Policy.
- Sub-processors: Cloudflare (Workers, KV, security). Updates will be listed here or in Privacy.
13. Disclaimers
- Service is provided “as is” and “as available”.
- No warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness, or non-infringement.
- Cryptographic assurances depend on correct implementation and secure key management on your side.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, TimeProofs is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill. Our aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of USD 100 or amounts paid by you to use the Service in the 3 months before the event giving rise to liability.
15. Indemnification
You will defend and indemnify TimeProofs from claims arising out of your use of the Service, your content, or your violation of these Terms or applicable law.
16. Termination
- You may stop using the Service at any time.
- We may terminate or suspend access for breach, legal risk, or security reasons.
- Upon termination, certain sections survive as set below.
17. Governing Law; Venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of France, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Exclusive jurisdiction and venue lie with the courts of Paris, France. The U.N. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.
18. Dispute Resolution
- Informal resolution first: contact legal@timeproofs.io and allow 30 days to resolve.
- Nothing limits either party’s right to seek injunctive or equitable relief for misuse of IP or breach of security.
- Class actions and representative proceedings are waived to the extent permitted by law.
19. Export; Sanctions
You represent that you are not a sanctioned party and will not use the Service in violation of export control or sanctions laws.
20. Changes
We may update these Terms. Material changes will be reflected by the updated date/version. Continued use after changes means acceptance.
21. Miscellaneous
- Severability: if a provision is unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect.
- Assignment: you may not assign without our consent. We may assign in connection with reorganization, merger, or sale.
- Entire Agreement: these Terms and referenced policies (Privacy, security.txt) are the entire agreement.
- Survival: Sections 4–7, 8–12, 13–21 survive termination.
- Notices: Email to the addresses below is sufficient for legal notices.
